Celebration of Our Learning

Year 5 spent the afternoon separating materials! In groups of four, they had a  mixture to separate. They discussed how they might do it and tried how well they could separate their  mixture, using a chosen method. Available items to help include: Sieves, magnets, bowls, paper filters

They had to consider the sizes of the items in your mixtures. Think about the materials they had available to help - what might work best? (February 2026)

In English the children have created beautiful monologues for a character on the sinking Titanic. They worked over the week to build great fronted adverbials and imagine the feelings of those on the boat. To end the week, we read each other's work and put a sticker on the work they thought was amazing. (February 2026)

Year 5 went to the new Hurland Pickelball/ padel centre in Farnham! We had an amazing time spending the afternoon try out a new sport, it has now inspired the staffing team to want to sign up too! (February 2026)

The Titanic had its own post office onboard, staffed by five postal clerks who worked tirelessly sorting thousands of letters and postcards. These letters were meant to be delivered to loved ones as the ship made stops. On its voyage, the Titanic dropped off mail in Cherbourg, France and Queenstown Ireland, before continuing to America. Passengers needed to write early to ensure their letters made it off the ship at these stops. After leaving Queenstown, the next opportunity to send mail would have been in New York.

This week we have been writing letters as a passenger on the Titanic! The children were allowed to decide whether they wanted a First Class or Third Class ticket and had to describe their first 24 hours on board! (January 2026)

In art year 5 have been creating their own stage designs out of natural materials we found around the school ground. We designed, collected and built the stages independently! They turned out great and we had lots of fun making them! Which one do you like the most? (January 2026)

In year 5 we have been doing our Tudor Portraits as part of our History unit!

In Henry VIII’s time, painters and portraits played a crucial role in politics, propaganda and personal legacy. Portraits were used to convey power, wealth and status and they helped shape public perceptions of individuals, including the king and his wives. Artists like Hans Holbein the Younger created iconic images that immortalized Henry VIII and his court. These portraits also serve practical purposes, such as choosing royal spouses! Anne of Cleves portrait famously influenced Henry’s decision to marry her!

In class we did our best to portray the six wives in ways that reflected their personalities and the qualities they would have wanted to convey in the portrait!

Portraits were the ultimate Tudor selfie! (January 2026)

In music, year 5 are using an online music studio to make some spooky songs. So far they have added some melody and drums and bass to their creepy creations. (January 2026)

In our final week of our Shackleton project we wrote poems. We used our poetry checklists to create detailed and descriptive poems about the Weddell Sea! (January 2026)

Year 5 took part in a Dissolving experiment! We timed how long it took to dissolve various amounts of salt into water! (January 2026)

Year 5 made quesadillas as part of our DT! We chose healthy fillings and made the tortilla from scratch! (January 2026)

This week we have started our Fractions topic in Year 5. We have been looking at equivalent fractions and remembering whatever we do to the numerator we HAVE to do the denominator!

Year 5 celebrated Christingle this week! We made our Christingles and learnt that the orange represents the world, the red ribbon represents the blood of Christ. The light signifies the light of Christ and the four sticks with sweets signify the four seasons and the fruits of the world. Thank you David for the lovely service. (January 2026)

Year 5 enjoyed learning all about set design this week, in particular Rae Smith who developed the set for War Horse. We spent time looking at the development from her sketch books to the stage and answered some very thought provoking questions!

Christmas fun!

As part of our Space topic, year 5 learnt about the process of night and day. We used torches and footballs to represent the sun and earth and turned it into some very fun and practical learning!

We are heading towards our final project in Art this half term. We have spent the weeks looking at light and dark field printing as well as tracing and marking using ink. To form our final projects we chose our favourite poem from the table and used it to form our ideas. As we were working we had to keep thinking to what technique would work best with this image.

Year 5 have been enjoying Netball this term! We have developed our defending and shooting skills and the children have loved our five a side matches!

Year 5's designed their own mythical Greek beasts and then wrote them into their own Greek story!
