Celebration of Our Learning
Michael Jones visited our class to talk about heathlands and the importance of looking after these special habitats. We focused on birds as part of our Generation Restoration topic, recapping what we already knew before completing a quiz to discover new and interesting facts. We also discussed how we can treat our heathland better, thinking about simple ways to protect wildlife and care for these important environments. (May 2026)
This week, Year 4 have been learning how to write a newspaper report based on the story This Morning I Met a Whale, imagining that the events really happened. They explored how to turn the story into a believable news report by including key features such as a headline, an introduction with important facts, and quotes from “eyewitnesses”. The children worked hard to use formal language and organise their ideas clearly, showing great creativity while reporting on the surprising sight of a whale appearing in London. (May 2026)
Year 4 have created some wonderful homework to celebrate David Attenborough’s 100th birthday, including detailed sculptures, beautiful drawings and thoughtful letters. Their work shows fantastic creativity and a real appreciation for the natural world that Sir David has spent his life protecting. (May 2026)
Year 4 spent the morning playing rounders in the sunshine, enjoying the chance to be active outside. They practised batting, fielding, and quick decision‑making, with plenty of good teamwork on show. (May 2026)
This week Year 4 are learning about money by exploring the difference between pounds and pence, and how they work together to make different amounts. They are also investigating the wide variety of coins we use in the UK, recognising their values, comparing them, and using different combinations of coins to make the same total. (April 2026)
Our amazing Year 4 Dolphins brought The Flower Man to life with such colour, energy, and heart. Their enthusiasm shone through every scene, and their joyful singing filled the hall like sunshine. We’re incredibly proud of their teamwork, creativity, and confidence. Well done, Dolphins — you truly made the story bloom. (April 2026)
In English, Year 4 have been learning about William Shakespeare and exploring his life and history. We discovered when and where he lived, the types of plays he wrote, and why he is still so important today.
To share our learning, we created informative leaflets for our local museum. Each leaflet included all the key facts, such as details about Shakespeare’s life, his famous works, and interesting information about the time period he lived in. (April 2026)
This week Year 4 were invited to work alongside the Museum of Farnham on a heritage art project as part of the major restoration works to the facade of the museum! The project involved an artist (Becci Kenning) working with the children to produce drawings which will be incorporated into four unique designs and replicated as window blinds to be hung in the museum’s 14 sash windows. The artwork will be viewable on the inside and outside of the historic building once the scaffold is removed and will remain as a legacy of the project and the school’s involvement! A very exciting opportunity! (April 2026)
This week we have also had a visit from a local dental nurse as part of our learning on 'healthy minds and bodies'. We were reminded of the importance of brushing our teeth as well as the importance of a balanced diet! (April 2026)
Year 4 explored how to create a climax and anti-climax, inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. They used exciting vocabulary and short sentences to build tension, before calming their writing to create an suspenseful ending. (March 2026)
During Easter Pause Day, our Year 4 children threw themselves into a wonderfully creative challenge: designing and building their own Easter structures inspired by key moments from the Easter story. After exploring the events of Holy Week and discussing their significance, the children chose one scene that resonated with them—whether it was Palm Sunday, the Last Supper, the Garden of Gethsemane, or the empty tomb on Easter morning. (March 2026)
Year 4 enjoyed an exciting Easter egg hunt around the school grounds, turning the afternoon into a lively adventure filled with teamwork, problem‑solving, and plenty of laughter. (March 2026)
Year 4 stepped back in time for their spectacular Egyptian Day. Throughout the day, the children explored the world of Ancient Egypt through hands‑on activities that brought their classroom learning to life. They decoded hieroglyphics, examined the rituals of mummification, investigated the importance of the Nile, and discovered the incredible achievements of this ancient civilisation. Each activity gave them the chance to apply their knowledge in creative and memorable ways, deepening their understanding far beyond the class room. (March 2026)
Yesterday Year 4 took part in a social media workshop. We all found it really interesting and were all quite shocked by some of the statistics of how many years of our life could be wasted online, (e.g. if we spend 5 hours a day on a screen by the time we are 80, we will have wasted 40 waking years!) We then had a brilliant discussion about all the lovely things we could be doing away from screens and set ourselves 3 goals! (March 2026)
Year 4 celebrated Mud Pi day which is a national approach which encourages outdoor learning. Today we took our fractions outside and used chalk to show what they look like in abstract form. (March 2026)
In science this week we investigated how sound is produced by vibrations – even when it is hard to see them! We discovered that the vibrations travel through the air and are detected by our ears. (March 2026)
We were so impressed with the wonderful efforts made by the whole of year 4 on World Book Day this week! We have enjoyed a live online lesson with a number of authors as well as a real- life author visit! We also produced some excellent pieces of writing from our whole school World Book day writing challenge 'Rain before Rainbows!' (March 2026)
Year 4 were lucky enough to be invited to the new Hurlands pickleball and paddle centre in Farnham. We had a fantastic afternoon trying out the facilities and showing off our new skills! (February 2026)
Year 4 embarked on an exciting scavenger hunt around the school grounds, searching for various operating system (OS) symbols hidden in different locations. The scavenger hunt not only tested their problem- solving skills but also helped them to understand the importance of these familiar symbols in our local area. (February 2026)
Year 4 have been working hard in science this week, learning about the features of the digestive system. We decided to recreate the digestive system using tights and food items! We thought carefully about each feature and discussed how the tights and our hands represented different parts of the body. (February 2026)
Year 4 took part in the 'Big British Birdwatch' this week. It is a citizen science project for schools across the UK. It takes place alongside, the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch and helps monitor bird populations. (January 2026)
Year 4 explored questions they had about the digestive system and talked about organs, glands and enzymes. We looked at all the organs in the digestive system and the role each one has in digesting our food. The children worked in small groups to draw the outline of a human body and then add in the organs and label them.(January 2026)

Our Year 4 residential was a truly unforgettable experience, where the children showed fantastic resilience and represented Potters Gate brilliantly. From exploring the darkness of the caves, to showing strength and determination in bouldering, everyone pushed themselves to try new challenges. The blindfold trail helped build trust and teamwork, while the river study gave us a chance to learn more about the natural world in a hands-on way. Throughout the trip, Year 4 supported one another, showed great courage, and made memories that will last a lifetime. (May 2026)
